Case Studies Soil Remediation

The Problem

  • Due to many social, economic and political factors, the development of brownfield land is increasing.
  • Contamination is often seen as a hurdle to the redevelopment of such sites.
  • Redevelopment works often require a rapid solution to problems associated with contaminated soils. 'Dig and Dump' is a favoured route.
  • Landfill space is limited and costs are increasing rapidly.

The Solution

  • Using our expertise in bioremediation, Dr Mark McKinney formed a partnership that operated a soil bioremediation facility in Ireland.
  • Soils contaminated with hydrocarbons can be transported to the facility and remediated.
  • A range of organic contamination including diesel, gasoline, mineral oils, PAH's, BTEX compounds and phenols can be treated.
  • Treated materials can be used on redevelopment sites for landscaping purposes.
  • Recovered oils are stored on-site and recycled.

The Benefits

  • For the developer, materials can be quickly excavated from site to allow construction works to continue.
  • Bioremediation provides a more cost effective solution to landfilling.
  • Landfill space is being conserved.
  • Remediated soils are available for re-use on development sites.
  • Oils are recovered and recycled appropriately.
