Case Studies Soil Remediation
The Problem
- Due to many social, economic and political factors, the development of brownfield land is increasing.
- Contamination is often seen as a hurdle to the redevelopment of such sites.
- Redevelopment works often require a rapid solution to problems associated with contaminated soils. 'Dig and Dump' is a favoured route.
- Landfill space is limited and costs are increasing rapidly.

The Solution
- Using our expertise in bioremediation, Dr Mark McKinney formed a partnership that operated a soil bioremediation facility in Ireland.
- Soils contaminated with hydrocarbons can be transported to the facility and remediated.
- A range of organic contamination including diesel, gasoline, mineral oils, PAH's, BTEX compounds and phenols can be treated.
- Treated materials can be used on redevelopment sites for landscaping purposes.
- Recovered oils are stored on-site and recycled.
The Benefits
- For the developer, materials can be quickly excavated from site to allow construction works to continue.
- Bioremediation provides a more cost effective solution to landfilling.
- Landfill space is being conserved.
- Remediated soils are available for re-use on development sites.
- Oils are recovered and recycled appropriately.
